Societal Impact
Communication and social media etiquettes
Follow good manners in email, chat and social media.
Communication etiquettes:
- Be precise: respect other people's time, so keep emails and messages short and to the point. Respect data limits: instead of attaching very large files, share a link from cloud storage.
- Be polite, whether in synchronous communication (both people present at the same time, as in a live chat, a phone call or an online class) or asynchronous (replies come later, as in email).
- Be credible: think before you comment; what you write builds people's trust in you, or loses it.
Never reply to spam (unwanted bulk messages) and never open its attachments. And remember: a post that you delete may vanish from view, but not permanently; it stays part of your digital footprint.
Social media lets users create and share content. It has a great influence on politics, business, culture and education. Social media etiquettes:
- Be secure: choose strong passwords and change them from time to time; never share your login details; know who you accept as a friend; and beware of fake information. Verify a message from a reliable source before you believe it or forward it.
- Be reliable: think before you upload anything, especially personal photos and confidential files, because what you upload stays on servers.
- Never meet a person you know only online alone. If someone online asks to meet, asks for personal details, or makes you uncomfortable, tell a parent or trusted adult.
Think before you post.
