Wind

Learn what wind is, and how we use it.

We notice air when tree leaves rustle, when clothes on a line sway, or when the pages of an open book flutter as a fan comes on.

Moving air is called wind. Sometimes it blows fast, as in a storm. Sometimes it blows gently, and then we call it a breeze.

Make a firki (a paper pinwheel) from a square of paper, an all-pin and a soft stick. Run holding it, or blow on it, and it spins. What makes it spin? The wind.

A windmill works like a big firki: the wind turns its wings. Windmills can:

  • run flour mills,
  • pull up water from a well,
  • generate electricity.

A windmill farm is an area with many windmills that use the wind to make electricity. Leading windmill farms in India include Muppandal Wind Farm in Tamil Nadu, Jaisalmer Wind Park in Rajasthan and Brahmanvel Wind Farm in Maharashtra.

Moving air is wind, and just as it turns a firki, it turns the wings of a windmill, which can run flour mills, pull up water and generate electricity.
