Mindful Eating: A Path to a Healthy Body

Coluthur Gopalan

Meet Coluthur Gopalan, an Indian scientist who studied food and health.

Your book introduces an Indian scientist of food and health: Coluthur Gopalan (1918–2019).

He began nutrition research in India: the study of what nutrients our food gives us, and what our body needs.

Gopalan analysed more than 500 Indian foods to find out their nutritional value. Then he recommended a suitable diet for people in India.

He also led surveys of how well-fed India's people were. The surveys found that many people lacked protein, energy and other food components.

His work led to the Mid Day Meal Programme, now part of 'PM POSHAN'. It gives a balanced meal to children in government-run and government-aided schools across the country, and it has helped the health of millions of children. If your school serves a mid-day meal, you can thank Gopalan's work for it.
