Mindful Eating: A Path to a Healthy Body
Reading food labels
Learn how to read the nutrition label on a food packet.
Turn over a packet of chips or namkeen and you will find a small table: the nutritional information. It tells you what is in every 100 g of the food. Your book compares two packets.
| Per 100 g | Potato wafers | Roasted chana |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | 536 kcal | 355 kcal |
| Fats | 35.0 g | 6.26 g |
| Carbohydrates | 53.0 g | 58.58 g |
| Proteins | 7.0 g | 18.64 g |
| Dietary fibre | 4.8 g | 16.8 g |
(kcal means kilocalories, a measure of energy.)
Compare them. The potato wafers give much more energy and much more fat. The roasted chana gives much more protein and much more fibre, with far less fat. So roasted chana is the healthier choice.
Some foods have lots of calories because they are high in sugar and fat, but they have very little protein, vitamins, minerals and fibre. These are called junk foods: potato wafers, candy bars and fizzy (carbonated) drinks are examples. Of the two packets, the potato wafers are the junk food.
Eating junk food often is not healthy. It can make a person obese (very overweight), and that can bring many health problems. Remember Dr Poshita: 'Health is the Ultimate Wealth'.
