Measurement of Length and Motion

Writing lengths

Learn how to write a length with its unit.

A length is always written as a number and a unit together. Your book gives some rules for writing units the right way.

Small letters. Unit names (kilometre, metre, centimetre, millimetre) begin with a small letter, except at the start of a sentence. Their symbols (km, m, cm, mm) are always small letters.

No 's' for more than one. Write 3 km, not 3 kms; 20 cm, not 20 cms.

No full stop after a symbol, unless it ends the sentence.

A space between the number and the unit. Write 15 cm, not 15cm.

Write units in lowercase, with no plural 's', no full stop after the symbol (except at the end of a sentence), and a space between the number and the unit.
