Temperature and its Measurement
Boiling and melting
Investigate the temperatures at which water boils and ice melts.
Your teacher sets up two things: a laboratory thermometer in crushed ice, and another in water boiling on a burner. This is done only under the teacher's supervision, and you must not touch the set-ups. One by one, students go closer and read both thermometers.
After some time, they read both thermometers again. Have the temperatures changed?
The result:
- While water is boiling, its temperature stays the same. Even though the burner keeps heating it, the reading does not keep going up.
- While ice is melting, its temperature stays the same.
So the second readings match the first ones.
The temperature of water stays the same while it is boiling, and the temperature of ice stays the same while it is melting.
