The Modern Indian Art

New media art from the 1990s

See how technology changes art.

Liberalisation in the 1990s brought globalisation, the growth of information technology, and social unrest. Artists looked for new ways to respond.

Easel painting and signed sculpture lost some of their importance. Video and photography attracted artists, because many copies could reach many people.

Installation art combines painting, sculpture, photography, video and television in one space that the viewer enters. The early installation artists came from big cities (Nalini Malani, Vivan Sundaram) and dealt with grim themes.

Photorealism (painting that looks like a photograph or a TV screen) was used by Atul Dodiya, T. V. Santosh and Shibu Natesan to comment on violence and changing cities.

Photographers recorded people on the margins and the state of the environment (Sheba Chachi, Ravi Agarwal, Atul Bhalla). Today galleries, catalogues, digital painting and social media spread art widely.
