Mijbil the Otter
Caring for a pet
Explain the responsibilities of keeping a pet.
A lonely man. Gavin Maxwell lived in a cottage at Camusfearna, in the West Highlands of Scotland. When his dog Jonnie died, he was too sad to keep another dog. But life without a pet was lonely.
A pet is for years, not days. Before you get a pet, the whole family must agree, because it is a promise for many years. Cute puppies and kittens are often bought without thinking, and later left alone.
What a pet needs.
- a licence and yearly vaccination;
- toilet training and obedience training;
- regular grooming and bathing;
- a balanced diet;
- socialisation (meeting people and other animals), not being kept tied up or caged;
- daily exercise, affection and play.
Planning for an otter. Otters live in the marshes near Basra, in Iraq, where summers are hot and dry. To bring one to London (mild, wet, with many parks) you would need to plan for water to play in, fish to eat, a safe place to sleep, and permission to travel.
