The Midnight Visitor

There is no balcony

Explain how Ausable tricks Max.

'That nuisance of a balcony'. Ausable sits down and grumbles: this is 'the second time in a month that somebody has got into my room through that nuisance of a balcony!' Max says he used a passkey, and didn't know about any balcony.

A convincing story. Ausable adds real-sounding details:

  • the balcony belongs to the next apartment;
  • his room used to be part of a bigger unit, and the next room was the living room;
  • you can reach the balcony from the empty room two doors down;
  • someone did, last month, and the management promised to block it off, but hasn't.

Small, boring details make a lie believable.

In control of the time. Max says they'll wait half an hour. Ausable corrects him: 'Thirty-one minutes. The appointment was for twelve-thirty.'

The knock. Someone knocks. Ausable smiles: 'That will be the police.' He says he asked them to check on him, the door is unlocked, and 'they will not hesitate to shoot'. Max, black with anger, backs to the window and climbs out: 'Send them away! I will wait on the balcony.'

There is no balcony. Max drops from the sill, and screams once. The door opens: it is a waiter with a tray and drinks. 'There were no police… Only Henry, whom I was expecting.' And Max? 'He won't return… there is no balcony.' Ausable knew the waiter was coming, and built his trick around that knock.

A calm, quick mind beat a man with a gun.
