The Book That Saved the Earth
Books and us
Discuss the value of books and how to correct mistakes tactfully.
Do we still need books? Today TV, phones and the internet do much of what books once did. Yet printed books last, need no battery, and let us read slowly and think. Many people still call a book 'a man's best companion'.
Correcting someone powerful. Noodle never says 'You're wrong'. He uses respect ('your Brilliance', 'your Cleverness'), offers a fact, and lets Think-Tank take the credit. That is tact. It works better than arguing.
Think-Tank vs Noodle.
- Think-Tank: proud, sure he is never wrong, jumps to conclusions, reads words literally (word by word, missing the real meaning).
- Noodle: humble, observant, thinks before speaking, quietly right.
A satire. The play makes fun of pride and foolishness by exaggerating them: a 'balloon brain' who fears nursery rhymes. Mistakes like his come from reading words out of context.
What language? The Martians would have their own language. The play uses English so the audience can follow.
