How Quantities Combine: Understanding Data
Reading real data
Read real data about how Indians spend their day, and see what an average can hide.
The average Indian's day (National Time Use Survey 2024, rounded):
- sleep 34%;
- leisure, social and travel 27%;
- personal care 13%;
- unpaid work and care 11%;
- paid work 10%;
- learning 5%.
Very few real people live this average day. Breaking it down by age shows big differences: children spend much more time learning than youth, and adults much more time working.
An average over a mixed group hides the differences inside it. Breaking data down further, by age, gender, region or income, shows more.
One chart, both kinds. A chart of how 24 hours are spent is both a stacked bar chart (each piece is hours) and a 100% stacked bar chart (every bar totals the same 24 hours).
Body-state data (lying, sitting, standing) also adds to 24 hours: a patient lies down about 20 hours; a nurse stands and moves about 13.
