Essay-writing
A good essay
Plan and write a well-structured essay with an introduction, a body and a conclusion.
An essay is a composition of more than one paragraph on one subject. A good essay has four qualities:
- Unity: every part is linked to the subject.
- Coherence: the ideas follow one another in a logical order.
- Relevance: there is nothing unimportant in it.
- Proportion: the most important ideas get the most space.
The book's model essay, 'The Importance of Games', has five paragraphs:
- 1. Introduction: games are an important part of life, and of education.
- 2. Physical benefits: games keep the body fit and healthy.
- 3. Moral benefits: games teach sportsmanship, team spirit and how to accept defeat gracefully.
- 4. Dangers: too much emphasis on games can harm studies, and lead to injuries.
- 5. Conclusion.
A balanced essay considers the other side before reaching its conclusion. Use these steps for any topic: for example, an essay on how you could help the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.
Introduce, develop, balance, conclude.
