Public Nutrition and Health

Health care levels and careers in public nutrition

Find where public nutritionists work.

Health is a fundamental human right. Health care includes all the services that promote, maintain, monitor and restore health. It is organised at three levels:

  • Primary level: the first contact with the health system, through primary health centres (PHCs).
  • Secondary level: district hospitals and community health centres, the first referral level.
  • Tertiary level: medical college hospitals, regional and specialised hospitals, and AIIMS.

A public (community) nutritionist is trained in nutritional science, nutrition needs across the life cycle, assessment, nutritional care, food science, education, mass media and programme management.

They work in hospital outreach, ICDS, government policy committees, NGOs, and international bodies (UNICEF, USAID, GAIN, Nutrition International, Tata Trust, IFPRI), in large feeding programmes, school health, and companies' CSR work.

Careers: community nutritionist in PSM (Preventive and Social Medicine) departments, government programmes (ICDS, the Food and Nutrition Board), NGOs, consultancy, school and industry counselling, teaching and research. From the PHC to policy, nutritionists help at every level.
