Food Quality and Food Safety

Why food safety matters

Show why safe food is everyone's business.

Food is a major part of our health and our ability to work. Unsafe food causes many food-borne diseases. In India, diarrhoea in young children is still common.

Food-borne illness causes deaths. It also harms trade, tourism, people's earnings and the country's growth.

Why food safety matters more today:

  • More people eat out, where food is cooked in bulk, handled by many people and kept for hours.
  • More food is processed and packaged, even spices.
  • Food travels long distances, so risks must be controlled in mass production and distribution.
  • Microbes change and become resistant to antibiotics; nearly half of the known food-borne germs were found only in recent decades.

India trades food with the world under the WTO, so both imports and exports must be safe. Pollution, pesticides and additives also make food testing essential. More eating out, more processing, more trade: more need for safety.
