Early Childhood Care and Education
Why pre-school helps
Argue for good pre-school education.
From about three years, children explore actively: they walk, run, handle things and talk. Their vocabulary in their mother tongue grows fast, and they keep asking, 'Why is this so?'
The best environment is safe, secure and loving, with different people, play materials and a caring adult. Forcing small children to sit still and learn formally kills their curiosity and makes them anxious.
Good pre-schools use a child-centred, play-way method. Children learn quickly among other children (peers); many even start eating on their own at pre-school. Pre-school prepares them for formal school, and especially helps children from difficult circumstances.
All children learn naturally; pre-school adds to what home gives. Child care centres also free older brothers and sisters from looking after the baby, so that they can go to school. And they bring nutrition and health services.
The NCF 2005 (National Curriculum Framework) gives three objectives of ECCE: holistic (all-round) development, preparation for school, and support services for women and children. Play is how young children learn.
