Development Communication and Journalism

Communication and extension for development

See communication as a tool for change.

India aims to spread development to all, including its vast rural population. Communication and extension create awareness, sensitise, educate and empower people.

Development agencies and NGOs use websites, publications, videos and multimedia. They also do advocacy: speaking up for a cause, such as preventing early marriage or deforestation, through lobbying, alliances and networks.

In 2015, world leaders set seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which each country adapts, so that human development reaches everyone.

Extension programmes deal with poverty, food security, health and sanitation, non-formal education, the environment and gender equity. Extension educators pass on information and technologies, build skills, and more and more aim at behaviour change.

Organisations need experts in Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) for health, nutrition, education, HIV/AIDS and natural resource programmes. The field is also called Extension Education, or Development Communication and Extension. Inform, sensitise, empower.

Inform, sensitise, empower.
