Natural Hazards and Disasters
Earthquakes
Explain earthquake zones and mitigation in India.
Tectonic earthquakes are the most destructive.
The Indian plate pushes against the Eurasian plate; locked plates release energy along the Himalayan arc.
Peninsular quakes too: Gujarat (1819, 1956, 2001), Maharashtra (1967, 1993), along the Bhima fault.
The book's five zones: very high to very low damage risk; the Deccan is safest.
Mitigation: monitoring centres, GPS, vulnerability maps, earthquake-resistant design, light materials.
We cannot stop quakes; we can build to survive them.
