Natural Hazards and Disasters
Landslides and disaster management
Describe landslide-prone areas and how disasters are managed.
Landslides depend on local factors: geology, slope, land use, vegetation, human activity.
Very high: Himalayas, Andaman and Nicobar, Western Ghats and Nilgiris, north-east; safe: the plains.
Mitigation: restrict construction, farm valleys, afforest, bunds, terraces in place of jhumming.
Disaster management: pre-disaster (data, zoning, awareness), during (rescue, relief), post-disaster (rehabilitation, capacity).
Disaster Management Bill 2005 (now the Act) and the National Institute of Disaster Management.
