How I Taught My Grandmother to Read / Bharat Our Land

Reading character and theme

Think about the characters in the story and what it teaches.

Show, don't tell. A writer rarely says 'Avva was strong'. Instead, she tells us Avva had never cried, 'even in the most difficult situations'. From that evidence we work out the quality: she is strong-willed.

What she really wants. 'I want to be independent' tells us Avva wants more than letters: she wants to stand on her own feet, without asking anyone for help.

Setting and mood from small details. Sleeping on an open terrace on a summer night, a full moon, Avva's affectionate hand on the girl's forehead: the setting is rural and traditional, and the mood is tender.

The narrator's mistake. She judges by age and appearance (grey hair, spectacles) and laughs. The story proves her wrong. That is an assumption: a belief without checking.

Themes of the story:

  • education gives independence and dignity;
  • determination overcomes obstacles;
  • it is never too late to learn;
  • a teacher deserves respect, whatever their age or gender.

The method for any question like this: find a line in the story, then name the quality or theme it shows.

Find the evidence, then name the quality or theme.
