Writing to the editor
Write a formal letter to the editor of a newspaper.
What it is. A letter to the Editor is a formal letter to a newspaper, to raise awareness or suggest action on a matter of public concern. It often responds to something the paper has printed.
The format, top to bottom:
- your name, designation and address;
- the date;
- the subject (4–5 words, in title case);
- the salutation: Sir/Madam;
- the body: at least three paragraphs;
- the complimentary close: Yours truly,
What each paragraph does:
- paragraph 1 raises the issue (a news item, a survey, an experience);
- paragraph 2 looks at its causes and consequences;
- paragraph 3 suggests solutions and asks the editor to publish the letter.
Language: formal, clear and specific; short sentences; the purpose stated plainly; only relevant details.
