The Pot Maker / Gifts of Grace: Honouring Our Vocations

Words before nouns

Use determiners, the small words that come before nouns.

A determiner comes before a noun and tells us which, how many or whose: 'some clay', 'her basket', 'every girl'.

The kinds:

  • articles: a, an, the;
  • demonstratives: this, that, these, those;
  • possessives: my, our, your, his, her, its, their;
  • numbers: one, two, five;
  • quantity: many, few, much, little, several, both, all, some, any, no;
  • distributives pick out members one by one: each, every, either, neither ('each pot', 'neither batch').

Countable or not? Many and few go with things we can count (many pots, few days). Much and little go with things we cannot count (much clay, little sunshine).

Many/few for countable nouns; much/little for uncountable ones.
