Where and which way
Use prepositions to say where things are and which way they go.
A preposition shows how a noun relates to the rest of the sentence, often its place, direction, time or manner. Ask: where exactly? or which way?
From the story: Grandpa walked across to the shop; a shadow fell over Ravi; the vendors sat under the tree; Ravi hid behind a banyan tree.
Which way?
- through: from one side to the other, inside it (through the village);
- over: above or across (a bridge over a brook);
- along: following the length of something (along the riverbank);
- towards: in the direction of;
- into: entering something.
Where?
- near: close to;
- in: inside a space (in the garden).
Prepositions answer 'where?' and 'which way?'.
