The Lost Child
Read 'The Lost Child', a story about wanting and losing.
The fair. At the festival of spring, a little boy went to the fair with his parents, lagging behind at every shop. He asked for a toy; his father glared, but his mother showed him the golden mustard fields.
On the way, he chased dragonflies, gathered falling petals, and ran after doves and round a banyan tree.
Everything he wanted. At the fair he wanted burfi, a gulmohur garland, balloons, the snake-charmer's music. Each time he knew his parents would refuse, and moved on.
Lost. Then he asked to ride the roundabout, and there was no answer: his parents were gone. Terrified, he ran this way and that, crying 'Mother, Father', his turban untied, his clothes muddy.
Rescued. In the crush at a shrine he could have been trampled, but a man heard his cry and lifted him up. The kind man offered him the roundabout, the music, a balloon, a garland and sweets: everything he had wanted. The child refused them all, and only sobbed that he wanted his mother and father.
