The World of Limitless Possibilities / Nine Gold Medals
Facts, opinions, causes, effects
Read critically for facts, opinions, causes and effects.
Fact or opinion?
- a fact can be proved: 'At Rio 2016 she won silver in shot-put.'
- an opinion is a belief or feeling: 'I feel it was a moment of personal victory.'
Signal words for opinions: I feel, I believe, it is believed, perhaps. ('It is believed that she shaped better policies' is other people's judgement, so it is an opinion.)
Cause and effect:
- the tumour (cause) led to surgery and paralysis (effect);
- the Paralympics showing talent (cause) shifts how the world sees disability (effect).
A comparison. A caterpillar becoming a butterfly is like her change: from a confining stage into a new, freer life.
Two phrases:
- in hindsight: looking back afterwards (she is being reflective);
- a new lease of life: a fresh burst of energy and purpose.
Tone and title. Her tone is appreciative and optimistic. The title fits: she chose a world of limitless possibilities.
