Twin Melodies / A Friend Found in Music
Conflict, character and theme
Think about the play's conflict, its characters and its message.
Shruti's dilemma. She respects her father but longs to play fusion. Her inner conflict is duty to family against personal passion.
How the characters change and differ:
- Nabin changes from a strict traditionalist who calls fusion noise into a proud, supportive father;
- the friends: practical Peter, warm Iqbal, frank Avinash;
- Leela is the bridge: she reminds Nabin of his own past.
The generation gap. The father values only classical music; the daughter wants to try new forms as well. The play shows both sides listening.
The title. Twin Melodies means two kinds of music (classical and fusion) and two generations (father and daughter, both violinists) coming into harmony.
Idioms:
- bite the bullet: face something bravely;
- come round: change one's mind;
- bring it up: raise a topic;
- go down the drain: be wasted;
- drown your individual style: lose your own way among others;
- found the words: managed to speak.
