Follow That Dream / Believe in Yourself
Encouragement with caution
Think about how the letter encourages but also warns.
Analogy: enthusiasm is to passion as belief is to conviction.
Why count the cost? Knowing beforehand what a dream will demand (years, money, sacrifice) stops you from giving up halfway.
Motivation from inside. Doing what you love, and what you believe is right, keeps you going when your stamina runs low. That is intrinsic motivation: it comes from the work itself.
Dreams evolve. Later hopes are no less worthy than youthful ones, but they mean finding 'a path through a maze of hurdles' and the help of more people.
How the mother persuades. Her tone is optimistic and encouraging. She uses:
- questions ('Do you know that…?');
- examples (award winners; people whose plans were stopped by war);
- her own story.
She balances 'by all means follow that dream' with honest caution: she is not 'putting a wet blanket' on Ming's dreams.
