Follow That Dream / Believe in Yourself
Antithesis, metaphor, symbol
Find the opposites, metaphors and symbols in the poem.
Rhyme scheme: ABCB (see/be, fear/near, quo/grow, back/track).
Tone and speaker. The tone is motivational and encouraging, moving from thoughtful to determined. The speaker is a guide who talks directly to 'you', which makes the poem feel personal and close.
Imagery:
- 'no crowd to see' suggests a lonely, individual effort;
- 'push you back in fear' suggests the mental barrier that stops growth.
Symbols:
- comfort and the status quo: stagnation (standing still);
- the future: the unknown, which needs courage;
- the first step: a leap of faith towards self-improvement.
Metaphor: 'the first step is the hardest' is not about walking: it means the first action of any change.
Antithesis puts opposite ideas side by side in matching form: will the future pull you forward, or fear push you back? Ease in comfort against how we grow. Everyday examples: 'Speech is silver, silence is golden'; 'Easy to say, hard to do'; 'One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind'.
