Elephants, Tigers, and Leopards
More than, less than
Solve problems that say 'more than' and 'less than'.
Your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 10), has many problems with 'more than' and 'less than'. The trick is to decide: is the new number bigger or smaller? If it is MORE, add. If it is LESS, subtract. A bar diagram helps: draw the known number as a bar, then a longer or shorter bar for the new one.
Maharashtra has 444 tigers. Madhya Pradesh has 341 more than Maharashtra, so it has 444 + 341 = 785 tigers. Uttarakhand has 116 more than Maharashtra: 444 + 116 = 560 tigers.
At Kaziranga National Park, 8591 visitors came in December and 6415 in November. December had 8591 - 6415 = 2176 more visitors. November had 1587 more than October, so October had fewer: 6415 - 1587 = 4828.
Some problems take more than one step. In a small town there are 6304 jeeps. Buses are 253 more than jeeps: 6304 + 253 = 6557. Tractors are 5247 less than buses: 6557 - 5247 = 1310. Taxis are 1579 more than tractors: 1310 + 1579 = 2889. Each answer is used for the next step.
