Fun with Symmetry

Completing a symmetrical design

Complete symmetrical designs on a dot grid.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 11), there are designs drawn on dot grids. Some are finished: a cross, a star and a kolam of loops. They are all symmetrical. Others are only half drawn, and you must complete them.

To complete a symmetrical design, draw the missing half as a mirror copy of the half you have. Take each corner point of the drawn half. Count how many dots it is from the line of symmetry. Then mark a dot the same number of dots away on the OTHER side, in the same row. Join the new dots in the same way.

So a point 3 dots to the left of the line goes 3 dots to the right of it, at the same height. The copy is flipped, like your reflection in a mirror, not just slid across.

The book also shows some shapes along the border of the page: a kite with its tail, an arrow pointing up, an envelope with its pointed flap closed, and an arrowhead. Each one is symmetrical, with 1 line of symmetry. For the arrow, the line goes from its tip straight down the middle of its stem. For the envelope, it goes straight down the middle, through the point of the flap. Not every shape has just 1 line: a square can be folded 4 ways into matching halves, so it has 4.

To complete a symmetrical design, copy each point the same number of dots away on the other side of the line of symmetry, like a mirror.
