Mirror writing

Find out why the word on the front of an ambulance is written backwards.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 11), there is an ambulance. On its front, the word AMBULANCE is written back to front: the letters go the other way, and each letter is flipped. Why? A driver in front of the ambulance sees it in the rear-view mirror. A mirror turns writing back to front, so the back-to-front word shows up the right way round in the mirror! The driver can read AMBULANCE and make way.

A mirror beside a word turns it back to front. A mirror above or below a word turns it upside down. So we can tell where the mirror was by looking at how a word is written.

In the book, a girl writes CAT upside down: the letters A and T stand on their heads (the letter C looks the same either way up). This is what a mirror above or below the word shows. The book also prints TAP and HEN back to front, which is what a mirror beside them shows. And CAN is printed upside down, like CAT, so it needs a mirror above or below.

Some words look the same in a mirror beside them. WOW is one: the letter W and the letter O are the same on the left and the right, and W-O-W reads the same backwards.

A mirror beside a word turns it back to front and a mirror above or below turns it upside down, so how a word is written tells us where the mirror was.
