The Transport Museum

Vehicles and seats

Work out how many people different vehicles can carry.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 13, The Transport Museum), we find how many people can travel in a group of vehicles when every vehicle is full. We multiply the number of vehicles by the number of people one vehicle carries.

Here is how many people each vehicle carries: a cycle carries 1 person, an auto carries 3 passengers, a car carries 4, a minibus has 20 seats, and an aeroplane has 152 seats.

So 75 cycles carry 75 × 1 = 75 people. 52 autos carry 52 × 3 = 150 + 6 = 156 people. 103 cars carry 103 × 4 = 400 + 12 = 412 people. 20 minibuses carry 20 × 20 = 40 tens = 400 people.

30 aeroplanes carry 30 × 152 people. 30 is 3 tens, so this is 152 × 3 tens. 152 × 3 = 456, so it is 456 tens = 4560 people.

To find how many people a group of full vehicles carries, multiply the number of vehicles by the number of people one vehicle carries.
