Data Handling

Two ways to show data

Learn two ways to show data.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 14, Data Handling), children rush to eat golas of their favourite colour at lunch break. Rohan and Anjali want to eat the gola that most children eat, so they write down the golas eaten.

They show the same data in two ways. Anjali draws one gola for every gola eaten, in a row for each colour: 8 red, 5 blue, 7 orange and 10 yellow. Rohan draws a little figure of a child for every gola eaten, a boy or a girl, next to each colour.

From Anjali's rows it is quick to see that yellow was eaten the most (10) and blue the least (5). So Rohan and Anjali would buy a yellow gola. Altogether 8 + 5 + 7 + 10 = 30 golas were eaten.

Rohan's way shows something more: WHO ate each gola. Boys ate 6 yellow, 4 red, 4 blue and 3 orange golas, so boys ate yellow the most. Anjali's golas cannot show this, because a drawn gola does not tell us whether a boy or a girl ate it.

The same data can be shown in different ways; one picture per gola makes it quick to compare colours, and one picture per child also shows who ate them.
