Counting money
Count play money with Shirley and Shiv.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 3), Shirley and Shiv lay out their play money in nice patterns. In one pattern, a ₹20 coin is in the middle. Around it are four ₹10 coins and four ₹5 coins. How much money is that?
The quick way is to group the coins of the same value. The four ₹10 coins make ₹40. The four ₹5 coins make ₹20. The ₹20 coin is ₹20. Now add: ₹20 + ₹40 + ₹20 = ₹80. There are 9 coins, but the money is ₹80, because each coin has its own value.
We can also make an amount from coins. To make ₹36 from ₹1, ₹2, ₹5 and ₹10 coins, use three ₹10 coins (₹30), one ₹5 coin (₹35) and one ₹1 coin (₹36). To make ₹125, use twelve ₹10 coins (₹120) and one ₹5 coin. To make ₹183, use eighteen ₹10 coins (₹180), one ₹2 coin and one ₹1 coin.
There are other ways too. ₹36 could also be three ₹10 coins and three ₹2 coins. Ask a friend to check your amount by grouping the coins.
