Making even and odd numbers
Make even and odd numbers from given digits.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 3), you make 2-digit numbers from two digits, using each digit once. From the digits 1 and 6 you can make 16 and 61.
Which is even? Look at the ones digit. 16 ends in 6, which is even, so 16 is even. 61 ends in 1, which is odd, so 61 is odd. The same two digits can make an even number and an odd number: it all depends on which digit is in the ones place.
So to make an even number, put an even digit (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8) in the ones place. With the digits 2 and 5, 52 is even and 25 is odd. With 3 and 8, only 38 is even. With 4 and 6, both digits are even, so both numbers, 46 and 64, are even.
Are there more even or odd numbers from 1 to 100? Even and odd take turns: 1 odd, 2 even, 3 odd, 4 even, and so on up to 99 odd and 100 even. They come in pairs, one odd and one even, so there are 50 odd numbers and 50 even numbers. They are equal.
