Fraction of a group

Colour a fraction of a group of diyas with Meena.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 5), Meena has 8 diyas and wants to colour 1/4 of them red. How many is that? To find 1/4 of the diyas, divide them into 4 equal groups. 8 diyas in 4 equal groups gives 2 diyas in each group. One group is 1/4, so Meena colours 2 diyas red.

We can find a fraction of any group of things this way: split the group into as many equal parts as the bottom number says, then count one part. There are 12 cookies. Shared equally among 3 children, each child gets 1/3 of the cookies. 12 cookies in 3 equal groups is 4 in each group, so 1/3 of 12 is 4 cookies.

With the same 12 cookies: among 6 children, each gets 1/6, which is 2 cookies. Among 2 children, each gets 1/2, which is 6 cookies. Among 4 children, each gets 1/4, which is 3 cookies.

Simran invites her 9 school friends, and 1/3 of them get a hairband. 9 friends in 3 equal groups is 3 in each group, so 3 friends get a hairband. Kadamba's box has 16 barfis to divide into 4 equal parts: 16 in 4 equal groups is 4, so 1/4 of 16 barfis is 4 barfis.

To find a fraction of a group, split the group into that many equal parts and count one part: 1/4 of 8 diyas is 2 diyas.
