Measuring Length
Halves and quarters of a metre
Make measuring ropes and learn about half and quarter metres.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 6), you make your measuring ropes again: a 1 metre rope, a half metre rope (1/2 m) and a quarter metre rope (1/4 m). Fold the 1 m rope into two equal parts, and each part is 1/2 m long. Fold it into four equal parts, and each part is 1/4 m long.
Put two 1/2 m ropes end to end and they are as long as the 1 m rope: 1 m = 1/2 m + 1/2 m. Put four 1/4 m ropes end to end and they also make 1 m: 1 m = 1/4 m + 1/4 m + 1/4 m + 1/4 m. And two 1/4 m ropes make a half metre: 1/2 m = 1/4 m + 1/4 m.
You can mix them too. One 1/2 m rope and two 1/4 m ropes also make 1 m, because the two quarters make the other half. The book asks you to draw lines of 1 m, 5 m and 10 m on the floor, using your ropes again and again, and then walk, jump and crawl along them.
