Balance and change

Work out the bill and the change at Udaya Didi's shop.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 7), Udaya Didi runs a shop selling rice, atta, daal and spices. Daisy and Lou help her give back the balance to customers. The balance is the money a customer gets back when they pay more than the cost.

Balance = money paid − cost. A customer buys things that cost ₹113 and pays ₹150. The balance is ₹150 − ₹113 = ₹37. You can also count up from the cost: from ₹113, add ₹7 to reach ₹120, then ₹30 more to reach ₹150. ₹7 + ₹30 = ₹37.

Udaya Didi also asks tricky questions where a different number is missing. A customer paid ₹200 and got ₹75 back. What was the cost? The cost is what was paid minus the balance: ₹200 − ₹75 = ₹125. And if a customer gets a balance of 0, they paid exactly the cost.

Before paying, check that the money is enough. Daisy and Lou buy 3 kg of bananas at ₹55 a kg. That costs ₹55 + ₹55 + ₹55 = ₹165. One ₹200 note is enough. But three ₹50 notes and one ₹10 note make only ₹160: that is ₹5 short.

Balance = money paid − cost, and the cost = money paid − balance.
