Weigh It, Pour It
Kilograms or grams?
Decide whether to weigh something in kilograms or grams.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 8), we match things to the unit that is convenient for weighing them: kilograms or grams.
Heavy things are weighed in kilograms (kg). The book's example is a baby: a baby weighs a few kilograms. A table and a refrigerator are much heavier, so we weigh them in kilograms too. It would take thousands of grams to say how much a table weighs!
Light things are weighed in grams (g). An eraser, a pin, a paper clip, a pen, a feather and a watch are all much lighter than 1 kg. A pin is only a tiny part of a kilogram, so grams are the easy way to say how heavy it is.
A good way to decide: think of the 1 kg salt packet. If the thing is much lighter than the salt packet, use grams. If it is as heavy or heavier, use kilograms.
