Racing Seconds
Longest and shortest
Work out who took the longest and the shortest time.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 12), three children paint a picture each. Raghav takes 1 hour 20 minutes, Rani takes 2 hours 10 minutes, and Ritu takes 1 hour 35 minutes. Who took the longest time, and who took the least?
To compare times in hours and minutes, look at the hours first. Rani took 2 hours and something; the others took only 1 hour and something. So Rani took the longest, even though her minutes (10) are the smallest number. More hours always means more time, because one hour is 60 minutes.
When the hours are the same, compare the minutes. Raghav and Ritu both took 1 hour. Raghav's extra minutes are 20 and Ritu's are 35, so Ritu took longer. Raghav took the least time. From longest to shortest: Rani, Ritu, Raghav.
You can check by changing everything into minutes. 1 hour 20 minutes is 60 + 20 = 80 minutes. 1 hour 35 minutes is 60 + 35 = 95 minutes. 2 hours 10 minutes is 60 + 60 + 10 = 130 minutes. 130 is the most and 80 is the least.
