Maps and Locations

The four directions

Learn the four directions.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 14, Maps and Locations), a child talks about seeing a Siberian Crane at the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Rajasthan. These birds fly all the way from Siberia to India. How do they find their way? People keep track of directions too, and one easy way is to face the rising Sun.

Manu stands facing the rising Sun in the morning. The Sun rises in the east, so the direction Manu faces is east.

Now Manu stretches out his arms. His left hand points north. His right hand points south. And west is the direction behind him, opposite to east.

These four, north, south, east and west, are the four main directions. North is opposite south, and east is opposite west. On maps they are often shown with a small cross marked N, S, E and W.

Face the rising Sun and you face east: your left hand points north, your right hand points south, and west is behind you.
