Maps and Locations

Street maps

Use a street map to find your way.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 14, Maps and Locations), the children are going on a zoo trip, and the school bus will pick them up at Stop 1 and Stop 2. A street map shows the bus route. Here is the map in words, with north at the top.

A road runs from north to south along the west side of the map. Lali's house, Rohan's house and Ravi's house are to the west of it, in that order from north to south. Hospital Road runs from west to east along the north side. The hospital is on the north side of Hospital Road, with Stop 1 beside it. Park Road runs from north to south along the east side. To the east of Park Road are the children's park at the north end, then Prem's house, then Raju's house.

In the middle, between the two north-south roads, from north to south: Tinku's house and Golu's house, just south of Hospital Road; then a pond, with Jaideep's house to its east beside Park Road; then the basketball court; then Market Road; then the shopping centre, with Stop 2 at its east end beside Park Road; and last, the parking area.

The bus starts at the parking area and drives north. At the top it turns right onto Hospital Road, driving east, to reach Stop 1. At the end of Hospital Road it turns right again onto Park Road, driving south, to reach Stop 2. Notice: when you drive north, a right turn takes you east; when you drive east, a right turn takes you south.

On a street map with a direction arrow we can follow a route turn by turn: driving north, a right turn takes you east; driving east, a right turn takes you south.
