Fractions
Same denominator
Compare fractions that have the same denominator.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 2), Sevi and Shami share a piece of chikki. The chikki is cut into 3 equal pieces. Sevi eats 1/3 of it, and Shami eats the rest, which is 2/3. Who ate more?
All the pieces are the same size, because each is 1/3 of the same chikki. Shami ate 2 of these pieces and Sevi ate only 1. 2 pieces of 1/3 are more than 1 piece of 1/3. So Shami ate more, and we write 2/3 > 1/3.
The bottom number of a fraction is called the denominator. It tells how many equal parts the whole is cut into, so it tells the SIZE of each piece. When two fractions have the same denominator, the pieces are the same size. Then we just count the pieces: the fraction with more pieces is bigger.
So 7/8 > 3/8, because 7 pieces of 1/8 are more than 3 pieces of 1/8. And 3/5 < 4/5, because 3 fifths are fewer than 4 fifths. Remember the signs: > means 'is greater than' and < means 'is less than'. The open side always faces the bigger number.
