Angles as Turns
Full, half and quarter turns
Play Statue and learn about full turns, half turns and quarter turns.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 3, Angles as Turns), children play 'Statue'. They keep turning around on the spot, and when the teacher calls 'Statue!' they stop. Then they notice how much they have turned from where they started.
Ashutosh and Sahana each keep one foot fixed on the ground and turn around on that spot. Ashutosh goes all the way round and makes a complete circle: that is a full turn, and he is back where he started, facing the same way as at the start. Sahana goes only halfway round and makes a half-moon shape: that is a half turn, and she ends up facing the opposite way.
The minute hand of a clock makes a full turn when it comes back to where it started, at the top of the clock. A giant wheel makes a full turn when a seat that started at the point marked E comes all the way round back to E.
Half of a half turn is a quarter turn: a quarter (1/4) of a full turn. Turns in the same direction can be joined together. Reema takes two half turns in the same direction: 1/2 + 1/2 is a full turn. Two quarter turns in the same direction make a half turn. Four quarter turns in the same direction make a full turn, and she is back where she started.
