Far and Near
Feet and inches
Learn about feet and inches, two more units of length.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 5, Far and Near), we meet two more units of length that people use every day: feet and inches. Height is usually measured in feet and inches. Look at your ruler: many rulers have inches marked on one edge and centimetres on the other.
1 foot = 12 inches. So 2 feet = 24 inches and 3 feet = 36 inches.
How long is an inch in centimetres? Your book shows that 1 inch is about 2 cm 5 mm. And 1 foot is about 30 cm, so a 30 cm ruler is about 1 foot long. We say 'about' because these are close, not exact.
The book asks you to stand against a wall, mark your height, and measure it in feet and inches. A child who is 4 feet 2 inches tall is 4 feet and 2 more inches. In inches, that is 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 = 48 inches for the 4 feet, and 2 more: 50 inches.
