Far and Near
Distances between stations
Work out distances between stations on India's longest train journey.
In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 5, Far and Near), the longest train journey in India is by the Vivek Express. It runs from Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanniyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The book's table gives the distance of some stations from Dibrugarh: Dimapur 306 km, Guwahati 556 km, Jalpaiguri Road 983 km, Bhubaneswar 2,007 km, Visakhapatnam 2,450 km, Vijayawada JN 2,800 km, Coimbatore JN 3,675 km and Kanniyakumari 4,187 km.
The last station is Kanniyakumari, 4,187 km from Dibrugarh, so the whole route is 4,187 km long.
Every distance in the table is measured from Dibrugarh. So to find the distance between two stations, subtract the smaller distance from the bigger one. Vijayawada JN is 2,800 km from Dibrugarh and Jalpaiguri Road is 983 km, so they are 2,800 − 983 = 1,817 km apart. Vijayawada JN and Visakhapatnam are 2,800 − 2,450 = 350 km apart.
Which two stations are farther apart: Guwahati and Dimapur, or Bhubaneswar and Jalpaiguri Road? Guwahati and Dimapur: 556 − 306 = 250 km. Bhubaneswar and Jalpaiguri Road: 2,007 − 983 = 1,024 km. So Bhubaneswar and Jalpaiguri Road are farther apart.
