The Dairy Farm

Find the mistake

Find the mistakes in five children's multiplication.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 6, The Dairy Farm), five children show how they multiplied, and we check each one. Is it right? If not, where is the mistake?

Asma found 46 × 59 by multiplying each part: 40 × 50 = 2,000, 6 × 50 = 300, 40 × 9 = 360 and 6 × 9 = 54. 2,000 + 300 + 360 + 54 = 2,714. Every part is right, so her answer is right. Lado found 38 × 150 in two rows: 50 × 38 = 1,500 + 400 = 1,900, and 100 × 38 = 3,000 + 800 = 3,800. 1,900 + 3,800 = 5,700. That is right too.

Kira worked out 193 × 272 in three rows: 386, then 1,351, then 38,600, and got 40,337. The first row, 2 × 193 = 386, is right. The last row, 200 × 193 = 38,600, is right. But the middle row is for the 7 in 272, and that 7 stands for 7 TENS. It should be 70 × 193 = 13,510, not 7 × 193 = 1,351. With the correct row: 386 + 13,510 + 38,600 = 52,496.

Pankaj's first row for 203 × 54 says 4 × 203 = 80 + 12 = 92. But 203 is 2 hundreds and 3 ones, and 4 × 200 = 800, not 80. He multiplied the 200 as if it were 20. The correct working: 4 × 203 = 800 + 12 = 812, and 50 × 203 = 10,000 + 150 = 10,150. Then 812 + 10,150 = 10,962.

Asher found 626 × 323 in columns. His rows 1,878 (3 × 626), 1,252 (2 × 626) and 1,878 (3 × 626) all start in the ones column. But the 2 in 323 is 2 tens and the first 3 is 3 hundreds, so those rows must move to the left: 20 × 626 = 12,520 and 300 × 626 = 1,87,800. The correct working: 1,878 + 12,520 + 1,87,800 = 2,02,198.

To check a multiplication, check every row: each digit keeps its place value, so the row for a tens digit is ten times bigger (70 × 193 = 13,510, not 1,351).
