Weight and Capacity

Capacity problems

Solve capacity problems at Kiran's petrol pump.

In your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 8), Kiran owns a petrol pump and writes down the fuel sold in a day. 3 trucks each take 500 l: 3 × 500 l = 1,500 l. 6 buses each take 300 l: 6 × 300 l = 1,800 l. So the buses took 1,800 l − 1,500 l = 300 l more than the trucks. The cars took 10 × 50 l = 500 l, the auto rickshaws 12 × 8 l = 96 l and the two-wheelers 25 × 5 l = 125 l. In all, 1,500 + 1,800 + 500 + 96 + 125 = 4,021 l.

Riya fills one 2 l bottle and four 500 ml bottles for a picnic: 2 l + 4 × 500 ml = 2 l + 2 l = 4 l. Her friend Aarav fills three 750 ml bottles: 3 × 750 ml = 2,250 ml = 2 l 250 ml. Riya filled more, by 4 l − 2 l 250 ml = 1 l 750 ml.

A juice vendor has 5 l of orange juice, and each glass holds 250 ml. 4 glasses of 250 ml make 1,000 ml = 1 l, so 5 l fill 5 × 4 = 20 glasses. After 10 glasses, 10 × 250 ml = 2,500 ml has gone, and 5,000 ml − 2,500 ml = 2,500 ml = 2 l 500 ml is left.

A bottle of milk is poured equally into 8 glasses of 360 ml, and 120 ml is left in the bottle. The glasses hold 8 × 360 ml = 2,880 ml. The bottle had 2,880 ml + 120 ml = 3,000 ml = 3 l at the start.

To share, divide. In a factory, 8 l 400 ml of oil is poured equally into 7 containers. 8 l 400 ml = 8,400 ml, and 8,400 ml ÷ 7 = 1,200 ml = 1 l 200 ml in each. To find many equal amounts, multiply: 8 containers of 1 l 75 ml hold 8 × 1 l = 8 l and 8 × 75 ml = 600 ml, so 8 l 600 ml.

For capacity problems, multiply to find many equal amounts, divide to share, and change l into ml when that makes the numbers easier: 8 l 400 ml ÷ 7 = 8,400 ml ÷ 7 = 1 l 200 ml.
