Moon festivals
Learn about festivals that follow the Moon.
We celebrate many festivals according to how the Moon looks. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 10), gives some examples.
Diwali is celebrated on the day when there is no Moon in the sky: the night of the new Moon, Amavasya.
Rakshabandhan, Guru Poornima and Buddha Poornima are celebrated when the full, round Moon is seen in the sky. Two of them even have 'Poornima', the full Moon, in their names.
Eid is celebrated on the day when the Moon is seen on the first night after a new Moon.
Diwali is celebrated when there is no Moon; Rakshabandhan, Guru Poornima and Buddha Poornima at the full Moon; and Eid when the Moon is seen on the first night after a new Moon.
