Growing up with Nature
Storing grain
Find out how people store grain in earthen pots.
In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 4), Reena and Amit see earthen pots and bamboo baskets in the house. These are used to store grain.
The earthen pots are lined on the inside with neem leaves. The bamboo baskets are coated with cow dung on the outside. In this way, the stored grain stays safe from insects and pests.
Different places have their own ways of storing food. In Uttarakhand, people use a container called a Tumri. It is made from a bottle gourd that has been dried, and it is round or oval in shape.
