How Things Work

Things that spin

Find out how things that spin work, with Meera and Dhruv.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 7), Meera and Dhruv love finding out how things work. Every weekend they explore something new. One Sunday, Meera spins a coin on the table. 'Watch this!' she says.

Can every object spin? Meera and Dhruv find that some can and some cannot. A coin spins, and as it slows down, it begins to shake. A bangle spins too, and the sound it makes changes as it goes. A wooden spinner, a top, is made for spinning. But an eraser does not spin properly.

Then Meera has a question: 'How does a top spin?' So they decide to make spinners of their own.

Many things around us spin. Ceiling fans spin, and so does a potter's wheel when the potter makes a pot.

Some objects spin and some do not: coins, bangles and a top spin, but an eraser does not spin properly; fans and potter's wheels spin too.
